Hello All,
I've come to share my experiences with you on Writer's Block and/ or Indolence.
The two are very similar. I say this because both result in "work or writing" not being done.
I'm on my second novel and for the pass few days I haven't been writing anything, in fact i haven't even
looked at the work or cared to, to be honest. Now this is obviously unhealthy for someone who actually
wants to make a career out of writing but i just couldn't help it.
The funny thing is I've been telling everyone i have Writer's Block. My sole reason is because it sounds
better that saying i'm lazy. Writer's block is very common and it happens to everyone at some point
in time but honestly I know I don't have writer's block. I know this because before actually start writing
any story I create an Outline for the story. This Outline tells me what
to have in every chapter and is a general guide for the entire plot of the story, so i just follow the outline
when writing. Therefore I'm not a suffering from Writer's block but from Indolence.
You might ask yourself, "Okay what is the point of this?" The point really is understanding what you have.
Understanding what you have will help in determining ways in which to help or fix said problem. I have
shared below things I do and things i'm trying now to help with my problems of Writer's block and/or
indolence.
WRITER'S BLOCK
1. As i mentioned before, creating at outline is a great way to assist you in your writing. I adopted and learned the method from years of writing many research papers for school. Its very effective. You should try it.
2. Bounce ideas off of friends and the people around you. If you're not sure about something ask someone what they think of it. You don't have to explain to them in detail if you don't want to but ask the question hypothetically. For example; you're not sure if you should kill or injure the Villain in your story or how you should do it. Simply ask a friend. You might be surprised how many awesome ideas you get from others.
3. Make notes and jot down ideas. If you get a new idea or thought, even if it seems stupid, note it. Sometimes the best plots are derived from crappy ideas.
4. Take a break. Sometimes its just best to take a break, free your mind and come back to it later.
INDOLENCE
1. Make reminders about your unfinished story. Use post-it notes, your phone alarm, anything that will will service as a constant reminder of your story.
2. Remind yourself daily of your reasons for writing. it will put you back on track and away from indolence especially if you are passionate about your writing goals.
3. Remove yourself from distraction. If you're not writing because you're partying often with friends or you're addicted to Netflix, then cut yourself off of these things for a while until you are able to better control yourself.
These are just some things that I have done and am currently doing. Share your ideas below on how you handle Writer's block and indolence.
